The Night World series is a fantasy series written by L. J. Smith, the same author who is responsible for The Vampire Diaries.

In Night World, vampires, witches, werewolves and shape shifters live among humans without their knowledge. This society is called Night World by those in it and those who know their existence. The secret society has its own rules:

  1. Never tell a human about the Night World's existence
  2. Never fall in love with one of them

Of course, in each volume of the series, these two rules are often broken, either by accident or purposely. In each volume, the main protagonists are usually teenage girls with various background stories.

The Night World series places strong emphasizing on the ‘’Soulmate Principle”, where in one way or another, each of the main protagonists meet with their true soulmate, while facing many challenges.

As the series progresses, the arrival of the Apocalypse arrival is introduced. In order to prevent the Apocalypse from happening, the characters have to search for the "Wild Powers", mentioned in an old prophecy, although it is uncertain whether the "Wild Powers" will save the world or contribute to its destruction.

The final book, Strange Fate, has not been published yet. Fans have been waiting for nearly a decade for its publication. However, according to L. J. Smith's official website on October 12, 2011, the final volume in the series has now entered the final editing stage.

In 2008, the nine book series was reprinted in three omnibus volumes with a preview of Strange Fate in the third volume.

The series had been on the New York Times Bestseller List for children's books for 22 weeks as of May 19, 2009.
