The Last Exiles (ISBN 9780778312017) is Ann Shin's first novel. It is set in North Korea. Jin and Suja meet in university. They come from very different backgrounds. Suja's father is the photo editor for a major paper in Pyongyang. She has grown up in a prominent, affluent family. Jin comes from a rural farming village farther north where food has become scarce. When Jin tries to help his family, he sets off a series of events that change both their lives.
