The first book in the William Monk series by Anne Perry is The Face of a Stranger (ISBN 0-8041-0858-7).

When he wakes up in a hospital, William Monk cannot remember anything about himself or his life, not even his own name. He cannot recognize his own face in the mirror. He discovers that he is a police officer, but is afraid that if anyone knows he has lost his memory, he will lose his job. So he bluffs his way through.
