The protagonist is the main character in a work of fiction. He or she is usually the focal character in the story.

The protagonist is not necessarily a hero or even a "good" character, but if the character is not well-written and interesting, it is unlikely the work will be worth reading.

The protagonist is at the center of the story, makes the key decisions, and experiences the consequences of them. The protagonist is the primary agent propelling the story forward, and is often the character who faces the most significant obstacles. If a story contains a subplot, or is a narrative made up of several stories, then each subplot may contain its own protagonist.
