Jean-Paul Sartre (June 21, 1905 – April 15, 1980) was a French author, essayist, playwright and philosopher. Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964, a prize which he declined. He was a leader in the Existentialist movement. He associated with other authors and intellectuals including Albert Camus.
