The story in this trilogy, set in Thurston (Bragg's name for Wigton), from the 1920s to the 1970s, follows the lives of John Tallentire, his son Joseph, and his grandson Douglas. John is the protagonist of the first novel, The Hired Man, Joseph in A Place in England, and Douglas in Kingdom Come.
